Air Barriers and Flashings

Also called water resistant barriers or vapor barrier, air barriers control air leakage into and out of the building envelope.

Air leaking is the leading cause of energy waste in commercial buildings. According to a study conducted in 2005 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, minimizing air leakage can result in energy savings as high as 37%. Air barriers include

  • Mechanically-fastened membranes
  • Self-adhered membranes
  • Fluid-applied membranes
  • Spray applied

Advantages:

  • Reduces maintenance and energy costs
  • Eliminates mold and mildew issues
  • Provides a more comfortable building interior
  • Applies easily
